Quick Bite

What an experience and all together new meaning to the phrase ‘want to grab a quick bite?’ High on the list of activities my wife and I enjoy doing together is celebrating any occasion with a splurge of food outside of our own kitchen. This can be a donut, bagel, dinner, lunch, ice cream… just to name a few! Over the past few months our habits (just like yours) have changed drastically. Similar to nearly all other events, a recent birthday celebration in our house faced significant roadblocks, in which creative solutions were required—let me explain.

Ashley has been raving about this restaurant in the city, The Fox and the Knife, which recently won a James Beard Award for best new restaurant. While I tried to create a dish or two at the house inspired by the restaurant, I realized that no matter what, I could not replicate the experience. It might have something to do with having a 9 month old at home and toys everywhere, but I just couldn’t do it.

Ashley’s birthday was earlier this month, and we decided that to celebrate it properly, we needed to take matters into our own hands and get creative! We packed up some plates, utensils, beverages, napkins, and birthday hats and traveled to The Fox and the Knife in South Boston. We parked on the street, picked up our food, and had a picnic in the back seat of the car. The food was hot and we had a quiet meal for the first time in months. It was a very memorable experience and I recommend it to anyone for a nice change of pace.

We also miss having dinner with our friends. As an Italian boy, I miss going to the North End for fresh pasta and a cannoli. Fortunately, our good friend Dave had the suggestion of all ordering takeout from the same restaurant and enjoying each course together via Zoom. With Dave’s menu suggestions, we picked up our food from Prezza in the North End this past Friday. I have to say, it was an absolute blast!

It’s going to take some time to get back to ‘normal,’ but in the meantime we are going to continue to have fun and think of creative ways to enjoy life. If you have suggestions or story on a unique experience in recent months – please share. It’s a great time to try something new while supporting our local businesses.

Until next time….
