This time, things will be different

As 2018 begins, there are many out there claiming that this year will be different.  Whether you pro-actively change anything in your world in 2018 is only a part of the answer. You already know the things that you need to change or that you’d like to see change – there is no time like the present.  Get on with your pro-active changes early so you can feel good about your efforts.  This year, like every year, will be different. Change will happen, and hopefully you’ll be aware and willing to listen to the winds of change.

There is no need to fear different or change. Both famous and allegedly cool leaders have addressed this concern in ways that only cool and famous people can do.

In the words of JFK, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

According to James Dean, “I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

Winston Churchill said “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”

And the oldest change quote that I could find originates somewhere around 500 BC, from Greek Philosopher Heraclitus who said “There is nothing permanent except change.”

The future will be different. Perhaps the most significant question to ask is how you’ll deal with things that are different?  Some change you can control and others that you cannot. Will you act the same and expect similar results? This may sound rhetorical to some, but it really is significant in many parts of your life.

In 2018, some will gain a spouse and others will lose one. Some will bring new family members into the world, get new jobs, change their residence and all of the other most stressful changes in life. No one ever said that change may not be stressful. It can be very stressful. But it is also darn near guaranteed.

The only resolution that I believe matters is this.  Change what you can and be mindful about the other changes happening around you to make the best of them – because they are coming.
